Hello, I'm Darren Yeo, a watercolour artist and teacher based in Melbourne, Australia. I am the founder of one of the largest watercolour learning communities, "Watercolour Mentor". My work features predominantly natural landscapes, urban streetscapes, and portraiture in watercolor medium. Watercolours are special to me because there is a sense of finality once an area has dried – you can’t erase or go over that area to ‘fix’ it. You need to accept and work with what is there. To lea

Atmospheric Natural Landscapes in Watercolor
Welcome to the world of Atmospheric Natural Landscapes in Watercolor. We all aspire to capture the beauty of an atmospheric landscape. Often, we hold a perfect image of the finished painting in our minds. However, the challenge arises when we are unsure of how and where to commence.
In essence, the key lies in comprehending the interplay between timing and the application of paint on wet paper. Without careful consideration, colors may blend haphazardly, resulting in a chaotic appearance. I am here to guide you in building both confidence and skills, enabling you to effortlessly paint any landscape.
Throughout this class, I will unveil my two-step process for painting an atmospheric landscape. First, I’ll demonstrate how to sketch a quick drawing using a pencil. Following that, we will embark on the painting process, with a primary focus on wet-in-wet techniques. This involves gradually adding paint to an already wet area, a crucial step in achieving that mesmerizing, atmospheric look.
We will also delve into the utilization of wet-on-dry techniques during the second wash, enhancing fine details and creating sharper contrasts.
Join me as I lead you through our journey of crafting light, softness, and atmosphere. Embrace the art of painting Atmospheric Natural Landscapes with confidence and skill.
Assignment:
Your class project is to create a drawing and painting of your own atmospheric natural landscape! This can either be the scene featured in this class or be based on one of your own photographs or scenes you have observed outdoors.
You may refer to the scanned drawing/painting templates attached below, which are provided for tracing purposes if you choose to use them. However, I strongly recommend drawing each scene freehand. Drawing plays a pivotal role in enhancing your painting skills, offering you an opportunity to compose and plan your artwork. Once you’ve completed the drawing, follow the watercolor steps and processes demonstrated in the class to bring your painting to life.
Materials:
Feel free to use any permanent black ink pens, watercolor paper, and brushes available to you. I recommend the following:
- Pencil
- Artist-grade watercolor paints (red, blue, yellow, white gouache, neutral tint)
- 100% cotton watercolor paper or sketchbook
- Watercolor Brushes: Mop brush and a variety of round brushes for detailing.
Getting Started:
Begin by reviewing the class demonstration videos. If you prefer, you can download the tracing templates to transfer your drawing, but the real growth comes from freehand sketching. Explore the steps and processes outlined in the class demonstrations to complete your painting.
If you’re interested in sketching and painting a different scene, consider researching free reference photo websites, selecting one of your own reference photos, or finding an outdoor location where you can sit and paint. Utilize the techniques covered in this class to create your own distinctive urban sketch.
