Watercolours are incredibly fun to use and with these paintings, you can be quite relaxed in your technique and enjoy playing with colour. I encourage you to give it a try and see how much fun you can have by following these videos. You’ll learn how to make 4 different cards, a snowflake, a robin, a christmas tree and the grand finalé –  a festive wreath!

By the end of this class, you should feel like you can use watercolours more effectively and you’ll be proud to send them to people you care about to show them you care! By the end of these workshops, you will know how to paint 4 different pictures using watercolours and masking fluid.

Creating Your Own

China will show you how to create your artworks by painting the pictures on the video. Feel free to pause the video at any time or rewind it so you can watch the techniques first, and then apply it to your own card. These paintings are designed with beginners in mind so you’ll absolutely be able to achieve it if you watch the video guides and follow the steps.

What You’ll Do

Follow the video tutorials to learn how to use your brush, apply the right amount of water and pigments and create your very own mini masterpieces! Feel free to make practice marks on a loose piece of watercolour paper beside you so you don’t make any mistakes to the final painting. It’s always good to have a practice first and then pop it on your cards. You’ll also learn how to use masking fluid which is super fun and easy to use.

  1. Snowflake. In this section, you’ll create a symmetrical snowflake using a pencil to draw the outline and masking fluid to conceal the shape. Once you’re happy with your drawing and you’ve masked it, you can then apply any colour you want or use my cooler blue palette. Feel free to make your snowflake look different to this, you can have a look online for inspiration or come up with your own!
  2. Robin. This painting is a little bit more realistic but it’s not as hard it looks! The trick is to add lots of water and thin layers of colour so that everything mixes nice and naturally. You’ll learn how to hide your mistakes and how to get the drawing right before you start on the colour
  3. Christmas Tree. This lesson is so much fun because you’ll be using the masking fluid again. If you don’t have masking fluid, you’ll just have to be extra careful around the edges. You’ll learn how to draw your outline of a tree to try and get that branch effect and also how to apply falling snow throughout the painting. You can adapt your greeting words using a pen and use whatever colours you want.
  4. Festive Wreath. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to paint a stunning wreath. It will take a little longer and it involves more skill so make sure you have a scrap piece of paper here to practice on! You’ll learn how to layer your leaves, how to create depth and how to mix your colours into different variations. I love this one so I know you will too.
