This course has two main goals: to furnish explanations of specific EMDR therapeutic tools, and through these tools, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model in the context of treating Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Complex PTSD)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a relatively recent and unconventional form of psychotherapy. Its popularity is on the rise, especially in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from experiences like military combat, physical assault, rape, or car accidents.
Although research continues, EMDR continues to be a subject of controversy among certain healthcare professionals.
At first glance, EMDR appears to approach psychological issues in an unusual way. It diverges from traditional methods involving talk therapy or medication. Instead, EMDR harnesses the rapid, rhythmic eye movements of the patient. These eye movements serve to diminish the intensity of emotionally charged memories associated with past traumatic events.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has acknowledged the effectiveness of EMDR in alleviating symptoms associated with both acute and chronic PTSD. According to the APA, EMDR can be especially beneficial for individuals facing challenges in verbalizing their traumatic experiences. However, the APA guidelines emphasize the necessity for additional research to determine the long-term sustainability of improvements achieved through EMDR.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment initially developed to alleviate distress linked to traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). The Adaptive Information Processing model by Shapiro (2001) suggests that EMDR facilitates the access and processing of traumatic memories and other challenging life experiences, leading to an adaptive resolution. Successful EMDR treatment results in the relief of affective distress, the reformulation of negative beliefs, and a reduction in physiological arousal. This course is authored by Vishakha Bhalla.
